چکیده

Environmental interest groups have traditionally equated herbicide use with degradation of water quality. If the entire water quality picture is rationally analyzed. the conclusions are quite the contrary. Use of herbicides compared to mechanical site preparation improves or maintains water quality. Short-duration pulses of residues may appear in streamflow. but data from forest ecosystem studies indicates that these residues are generally not significant to aquatic ecosystems. The herbicides currently being used in southern forestry are low in toxicity and do not persist in the environment. Herbicide use significantly reduces the major, but frequently ignored, water quality problem, sediment. Site preparation with herbicides maintains watershed hydrologic conditions close to that of undisturbed stands and does not aggravate storm runoff, which can transport large amounts of sedimeni into streams. In addition, herbicide use does not produce adverse soil disturbance. which can lead to compaction and markedly increased soil erosion. Sediment displaced in streams produces significant and long-term changes in aquatic systems and can adversely affect stream biota and water quality large distances downstream.

Fate and Transport of Forestry Herbicides in the South: Research Knowledge and Needs

A review of the fate and environmental risks associated with the use of hexasinone, imasapyr, sulfometuron methyl, and triclopyr in pine silviculture in the South is presented. Herbicides used in forestry can contaminate surface waters to varying degrees depending on the application rate , method of application, product formulation, and site specific characteristics, but streamside management z...

orestry herbicide fluences on biodi nd wildlife habitat southern forests

In the southern United States, herbicide use continues to increase for timber management in commercial pine (Pinus spp.) plantations, for mod@ing wildlife habitats, and for invasive plant control. Several studies have reported that single applications of forestry herbicides at stand initiation have minor and temporary impacts on plant communities and wildlife habitat conditions, with some repor...

Precision Forestry: Operational Tactics For Today And Tomorrow

The term “Precision Forestry” is being used more frequently in the forest products industry. This paper defines two broad categories of precision forestry as 1) using geospatial information in forest management and planning, and 2) site-specific silvicultural operations. One case study is presented for site-specific application of herbicides and fertilizers in herbaceous weed control activities...

The Use of Herbicides in Hardwood Forestry

Herbicides can play an important role in hardwood management by providing foresters and landowners with a means to eliminate undesirable stand components. Although herbicide technology for hardwood management still needs much development, some methods are available and MU be used to enhance the value of the stand. With an emphasis on safety, de&ailed information about the benefits and methods o...
